Gearlink Kawasaki’s Glenn Irwin picked up 16 points from the first race of the 2015 season at Donnington Park in a race that had spectators unable to take their eyes off the action.
Having started from the second row off the grid, come the second corner the Carrickfergus man found himself in first place. Leading a strong pack consisting of team-mate Ben Wilson, Luke Stapleford and debutants, Jake Dixon and Kyle Ryde, Irwin stayed on top until the race was forced to be stopped, after Freddie Pett’s crash spewed gravel all over the track.
On the restart, running a six lap race, the 25 year old, again got off to a great start holding the pole, but Stapleford continued to close the gap and with one lap to go, overtook. Jake Dixon, climbing from sixth place, set a fastest lap to catch the front two and reel in Glenn coming into the last lap. Despite continuously getting quicker, Dixon couldn’t catch Stapleford who took the victory.
Jordanstown rider, Andy Reid, who also made his first appearance in the 600-class, battled his way to fifth place, beating Gearlink’s Ben Wilson, who returned this year, after a disappointing 2014 season in BSB.
Tomorrow’s race is sure to provide more mouth-watering action as the mass of contenders battle it out once again.
